It’s been an adventurous weekend to go on safari to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve while staying in St Lucia. The rangers had some splendid sightings while out in the reserve, some highlights included Elephant’s approx. 150 of them as they entered the reserve, Lion’s next to a kill and to top the sightings a Cheetah on a kill. The sightings mostly occurred in the lower Umfolozi section as this area offers one more open spaces and the bush is not as dense as that in the Hluhluwe side.
To travel from St Lucia to the oldest proclaimed reserve in Africa is only 54 km and Heritage Tours & Safaris departs daily at 5:00am they offer either a half day or a full day option with catering included, what could be better than enjoying a traditional braai while watching game. All of the staff are experienced and will undoubtedly offer you a magnificent outing while in the area of St Lucia. Each game drive vehicle has been adapted to offer you unique viewing opportunities so make sure not to forget the camera and binoculars. The too offer day excursions on the St Lucia Estuary and take you Hippo & Croc viewing with an estimated 800 Hippo’s and 1200 Nile crocodiles one is sure to have some awesome pictures. We would advise that one takes the sunset trip as this is the most scenic time to travel on the Estuary. The St Lucia Estuary is also the largest Estuarine system in Africa and stretches 85km and at its widest can be more than 10 km. Its a unique experience and one sure not to miss.
